Whiteland’s College, Roehampton, UK

Delivered On The Ground 2006

Heritage

“Whitelands College is one of the oldest higher education institutions in England”

The project involves the adaptation and extension of a Grade 1 listed, William Chambers, mansion to provide academic facilities for the university together with the construction of new halls of residence, set within an 18th century landscape.

Whitelands College is one of the oldest higher education institutions in England, predating every university except Oxford, Cambridge, London and Durham. The Church of England’s National Society founded the College in 1841 as a teacher training college for women. It took its name from Whitelands House, a Georgian building in the King's Road, Chelsea, previously used as a school.

As project landscape architect, Urbanlogic’s Director at the time Ian J Vincent was responsible, the detail design and for overseeing the landscape construction including the technical solutions through out the construction period in order to integrate new buildings and parking within the grounds.

Retaining the many mature trees, whilst protecting and enhancing views to adjacent Richmond Park, detailed design of external areas including a new garden to the proposed chapel and two internal courtyards which are being revealed by the development.

At the time project consultants were Whitelaw Turkington
