New Lynn Library Feasibility Study

Delivered 2013

“‘Like all successful cities across the world, Auckland is growing. ”

This growth brings challenges, as well as opportunities, as we work towards achieving our vision of becoming the world’s most liveable city. We need to protect and enhance what already makes our region great, while facing up to what’s needed to make it even better.’ -? Auckland Plan

In accordance with the Auckland Plan, changes are taking place throughout the region; including New Lynn, which has been designated a Metropolitan Centre. Recent trends also identify changes are taking place in the functional use of library space.

In response to these changes, and the predicted population growth of the New Lynn Area, Auckland Council commissioned Urbanlogic and SGA to produce a report to capture the current and future demand for the New Lynn Library, as well as establishing future library trends.

This feasibility study and DNA mapping report focuses on the New Lynn Library and its current site on Memorial Drive. It provides a summary of the current planning documents, future directions of libraries, the current and projected population and demographics of New Lynn, and an analysis on the existing New Lynn Library.

In response to this body of research, five key trends have been identified as appropriate for inclusion in the New Lynn Library; as well as providing a recommended library area:population ratio and recommended gross floor area for the future New Lynn Metropolitan Library (2031); and outlining additional research that is required to support this report.
